From Spain to Montreal to Victoria, it's been a big week for rescued Galgo, Dylan.
He arrived into rescue care at Galgos en Familia in Malaga, Spain in July 2023. He was just skin and bones. I met him yesterday (see post below) and he was an angel. Today we got to hang out and do some photos and I am just so in love... please pop over to my full blog post to see his 'before' photos and just how far he's come... https://www.wendynesbitt.com/blog/dylan Adoption info at: https://www.facebook.com/egpwesterncanada |
New arrivals... like midnight last night (!) arrivals... Dylan and Ramon were on hand to meet some of their new galgo friends (Willow, Dakota, Lazarus + Dilly) and some new human ones too. I was in awe of how chill they were and how much they were engaging with people... going up to strangers for pets and if you stopped, they'd inch closer for more... amazing considering the life they endured before they were rescued.
Ramon (green jacket) has been adopted, but sweet Dylan is adoptable!!

Arturo + Zorro came by the studio for adoption profile portraits and totally nailed it!
Zorro (brindle) was pretty stoked so took a moment to start to get the rhythm of the session. Arturo (black) who is very calm and measured in his movements was much more interested in whoever was holding the treat, but that couldn't be me because he's also a bit of a velcro dog! As former dogs used for hunting in Spain, both have had pretty rough + tough lives before arrival into care so it's beautiful that both dogs are getting the chance to live as beloved family members. For more info on Arturo + Zorro, please visit EGPWC's facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/egpwesterncanada |
Arturo is new to town. Originally from Spain, he's had a long trip getting here with stops in the US, Vancouver before landing in Victoria.
But other than him having some big sleeps in his foster home, you'd never know the journey he's been on. He's being fostered by my friend along with her dog Tica so I got to meet him on our walk last week -- he was all bundled up because it was cold out, but he also wore his bow tie! Arturo trotted along with us easily found a kindred spirit in the little Whippet, Sparrow. When the sea planes flew overhead, he stopped to watch them, and the birds and at one point rested his head on Tica's back to watch the waves of the west coast ocean. And she didn't care one bit. Arturo is one super cool guy and deserving of a life of love and care. More info at: https://www.facebook.com/egpwesterncanada |
Sweet little Hank is a new arrival to VBS, but he's amazing foster parents brought him to the Christmas mini photo session fundraiser!
Though not without some medical issues - he's battled Masticatory Muscle Myositis (MMM), an immune system disorder that attacks the muscle tissue and he's going to require a dental and likely BOAS surgery - this little guy is just as sweet as he looks and was so easy to photograph! For more about Hank: https://www.facebook.com/VictoriaBulldogSociety |
Sweet Malibu. Our visit was short, but had Mel continued to give her squishes and massager her from above, I think 'Bu would've stayed there all day.
Malibu was an emergency intake who came from a shelter on the mainland. With a whole host of medical procedures required, this little love is now in foster where she can get the medical help she needs and the TLC of Team Malibu. For updates and to watch her progress: https://www.facebook.com/VictoriaBulldogSociety |
The Greyt Global Greyhound Walk is an annual international event aimed at bringing awareness to the awesomeness of greyhounds and sighthounds as pets. And I'm all for it. Every greyhound I've met, including the cuties on the weekend were so dang sweet! The turnout was great with 21 sighthounds and one l'il lab trotting along the trails around Beaver Lake Park.
Full story and photo set here: https://www.wendynesbitt.com/blog/greyt-global-greyhound-walk |
Zouave's arrival was a solo pick up... by me... so it wasn't easy to document when I had such precious cargo to keep safe!
But I got Zouave to his foster home -- who mostly recently fostered Idèfix -- safe and sound. Phew! Full story and photo set here: https://www.iwasasleddog.com/blog/welcome-zouave |
What these photos don't show... Momo prancing, Momo meeting my parents, the look on my face when I saw him in person.
Momo is another unique bulldog. He's just 2, so has a joyful youthfulness, but he can act like an old soul as well, just wanting to be close to you. In the few days since Momo arrived into care he's had his ears cleaned, skin folds cleaned, eyes cleaned, tail pocket cleaned and will be visiting the vet to get a few other items investigated, as well as the all-important neuter. https://www.facebook.com/VictoriaBulldogSociety |
Sweet l'il Remi came into care and needed surgery on her right eye to fix an ulcer. It was extensive surgery that included creating a conjunctival flap... the same surgery my dog Mr Coco had in 2015. The recovery is intense and requires weeks of drops and meds, and Remi has come through beautifully.
If you look closely at her right eye in person you can sort of see the flap, but what's more noticeable is that her right eye doesn't look straight on very well. I think it just adds to her charm. https://www.facebook.com/VictoriaBulldogSociety |
When Auggie arrived into the care of the Victoria Bulldog Society, he came fully equipped with all features. This handsome little gremlin can sit, lay down, wait and offer up some of the most amazing head tilts I've ever encountered.
In typical Frenchie fashion, he giant licker zoned in on my arms, my legs and even my face... he's pretty amazing. If you're interested in adopting this magical little fella, contact the Victoria Bulldog Society! https://www.facebook.com/VictoriaBulldogSociety |
Idèfix + Shining, who arrived into care last week, were staying at a foster a few blocks from my house so I popped up to get an update.
Both were still trying to be lap dogs and Idèfix was still a kiss monster. Full story + photo set at: https://www.iwasasleddog.com/blog/a-week-and-a-day |
Idèfix + Shining, two new arrivals.
Former sled dogs who will now have the opportunity to learn about a new life beyond the sled. From the Yukon to Vancouver Island, there will be a learning curve, but given the incredible community of former sled dog adopters here, they are in very good company. I'll be writing and sharing more photos from their arrival, but suffice it to say, I was christened with a grand face cleaning on the ride from the airport to the shelter while Idefix rode shotgun with me... on my lap. https://www.iwasasleddog.com/blog/welcome-idefix-shining |
Modelling is hard work.
Just ask Lola, one of the Victoria Bulldog Society's newest intakes! In true Frenchie fashion, this little bean was full of love and enthusiasm... but when the session was over, she curled up for a nap. She gave me LOTS of kisses, was confident in the studio and would do pretty much anything for a treat! Lola is currently adoptable through the Victoria Bulldog Society. https://www.facebook.com/VictoriaBulldogSociety |
I've wanted to meet Rocket for as long as he's been living with Kismet, but with a day of travel in between, he's not an easy guy to get to. So when we were on a road trip this summer and passing by their town, I stopped in.
Rocket was so sweet. SO SWEET! And I was equally stoked to see the handsome and hilarious Kismet again (we go way back ;) and just revel in their awesomeness. Read about the whole visit here: https://www.iwasasleddog.com/blog/sweet-rocket |
Millie + Sawyer are two buns who've been in foster for waaaay too long. . Being shy buns they didn't fully open up to me and they were on the move the whole time, but I could see that their were some pretty cute personalities in each of them -- especially when it came to treat time!
For more info please visit Amy's Bunny Barn |
Snort, grunt, snuffle.
So goes the soundtrack of this morning's Victoria Bulldog Walks Summer Meet Up. You can check out the full gallery and read all about the fun here: https://www.wendynesbitt.com/blog/summer-bulldog-meetup |
Hello! Surprise sleddies arriving on Tuesday!..."
Said the message I received on Friday at 4:43pm. And then today - Monday - at 11:54am: "So I screwed up and the dogs are on their way down now.. not tomorrow..." Ok... today's plans will be moved to tomorrow and today will be SLEDDIES! YAY! And there they were...in all their adorableness, Black and Robbie, with licks and hellos as I walked in the door. For more on their arrival story: https://www.iwasasleddog.com/blog/black-robbie |
Mr B and Baby D came to town to visit and I'm so happy I got to see them!
Bruno I've known since he first arrived into care after retiring form working as a sled dog. Dawson I met back in February when he arrived in a group of 14 former sled dog kennel workers. Now Dawson was too young to work, but it's clear he would've been put to work with that tall, lithe body of his. Instead, he is living an amazing life with a patient and gracious teacher and a couple humans who are making sure they get all the loves and adventures they want. For more on their visit: https://www.iwasasleddog.com/blog/mr-b-mr-d |
A month or so ago I was contacted by a musher up in northern Canada who needed to rehome some of their dogs and did I know of anyone. With few adoptions and full shelters in their area, they were in need of help.
I contacted my friends at the Victoria Humane Society (VHS) and they said absolutely they would take them in, as long as foster homes could be found. So I messaged Jill who helps co-ordinate all things sleddie for VHS and she thankfully jumped in taking over the arrangements with the sled dog kennel and then found foster homes. And today, we welcomed Gino + Olaf to Victoria! For their full arrival story, head to: www.iwasasleddog.com/blog/gino-olaf |
Chickpea is the newest arrival into VBS care and was a little bundle of love and fun, and of course a pleasure to photograph. She may have had a hard time staying still, and I had to try out all the noises in my arsenal to get her to look my way, though not actually come TO me (haha!), but teamwork prevailed thanks to patience and her sweet, easygoing personality... and love of snacks.
I think Unico should give her an endorsement deal, yes?! For more on Chickpea's progress, please follow: https://www.facebook.com/VictoriaBulldogSociety |
I've known Amy of Amy's Bunny Barn for years and finally got the opportunity to head out to her Bunny Barn (aka, her home) to photograph some of the bunnies in care for adoption profiles and her soon-to-be-relaunched website.
I met 15 bunnies in all and each one had their own personality -- just the like all the other animals I meet. Some weren't sure about the set up, some were totally cool with it. One even curled up in my lap! With bunnies being an often overlooked group of animals, whether being forced to live in cages much too small for them to really be the bunnies they are, to being dumped by people who think they'll survive in the wild (they won't), we're fortunate to have a reputable rescue like Amy's Bunny Barn on Vancouver Island to help educate and advocate for these little fluff bums as well as find adopters who can provide permanent, loving homes. So, introducing (in order): Wolfgang + Penelope, Rosie, Boomer, Toast, Piper, Maverick, Peter, Finn, Bear, Miko, Bambi, Charlotte, Mabel + Elliott! |
Buddy, lover of walks, treats and if you meow like a cat, he'll give you a head tilt.
This little 13-year-old is now in the care of the Victoria Humane Society after being found with frozen eyes in -46 weather in rural Saskatchewan. I went on an adventure with him and his foster family recently: https://www.wendynesbitt.com/blog/fridays-at-fleming-vol-5 |
In the late evening of February 19, 2023, 8 adults and 6 puppies, all who had been a part of the sled dog industry, arrived into care after a long drive down from the Yukon.
Welcome to the life of beloved family members: Baloo, Blue and your 3 puppies), Keni, Watsit, Willy, Yale (and your 3 puppies), Yang + Ying. Their full story can be found here: https://www.iwasasleddog.com/blog/14-new-arrivals-14-new-friends |
Lili, a new transplant and galgo survivor, came by for some "photographed with love" adoption profile photos. She's in the care of EGPWC, a new-to-me rescue who I'm happy to partner with and help feature another group of dogs, deserving of love and care.

Lemon, Ruby + Tito stopped by the studio for some photos so we went out with an end-of-the-year bulldog BANG!

Luna + Jackson stopped by recently as Luna is in palliative care with the VBS. She and Jackson came in to care and different times, but from the same home originally so they're in foster together.

Wait a sec... this isn't a bulldog!
No... this is Sir Duke, the boxer -- a recent palliative intake to the Victoria Bulldog Society. Read more about him here: https://www.wendynesbitt.com/blog/sir-duke |
Big-top Bruce!
A 1.5 year old, French Bulldog currently in the care of the Victoria Bulldog Society. He's bouncy, playful and all the things you'd expect from a young frenchie! More about Bruce here! https://www.wendynesbitt.com/blog/big-top-bruce |
Play hard. Nap hard.
Where are the treats? This little fella was taken to the vet for euthanasia, but thankfull that didn't happen and he's livin' it up... read more about Kenny here: https://www.wendynesbitt.com/blog/kenny |
The Victoria Bulldog Society (VBS) has a regular bulldog group walk and today's meet up was a parade of sweet squishies - some in costume!
The VBS brought along Lemon, their newest intake and she did amazing meeting all sorts of new friends and advocating for the incredible work of the VBS. https://www.wendynesbitt.com/blog/the-bulldog-parade |
The VBS have taken in a sweet squishy who needed extensive dental work. Jack was being a bit camera shy, but I was able to put together a little video of him and the other cast of characters I got to visit when I went to drop off some bottle donations!

Welcome Angel, Snickers and Tiger!
The kennel is Whistler is ready to retire so many dogs this year... here's hoping fosters and adopters are ready! https://www.iwasasleddog.com/blog/angel-snickers-tiger |
Oh Clyde.
He just wanted to follow Apex around... I mean, who doesn't? This handsome fellow arrived from Manitoba, the result of a sled dog operation cruelty investigation. Update: Clyde's been adopted and having so much fun and adventure! https://www.iwasasleddog.com/blog/clyde |
Peach... or Peaches
For some reason I started calling her Peaches, but it's apparently singular. Just Peach. Whatever her name, she's just a teeny, tiny sleddie with big ears and a bigger personality! https://www.iwasasleddog.com/blog/meet-peaches |
Cruz, Jack, Louie + Twister
Four new sleddies made it into retirement. Please read about their arrival here: https://www.iwasasleddog.com/blog/cruz-jack-louie-twister |
Troy ended up in town as part of cruelty investigation that closed down a sledding operation in the interior of BC.
He's a lovely sleddie... but not big on sharing my Oreo. https://www.iwasasleddog.com/blog/troy |
Yes, that is a sleddie puppy. Bamboo is his name, and silliness is his game.
At only 4-months old, Bamboo has survived parvo, so he's retired without even having worked at sled pulling. He came into care with seniors Meso (sibling to Ice) and Saturn (sibling to Mars). More on their arrival at: https://www.iwasasleddog.com/blog/and-a-puppy-makes-three |
Today was a chance for Bruno and Rio (formerly Centurion) to have a visit and get some updated photos for their adoption profiles.
I think the fall leaves really work for them, don't you? More from this visit here: https://www.iwasasleddog.com/blog/bruno-rio |

I dropped some bottles off for VBS's fundraiser and couldn't help but go meet their newest addition, Massa.
More on this visit here! |
Six days into their retirement, four sleddies met up with new friends to go for a walk in the woods.
Featuring Tig, Kerri, Sparkle + Herman... Jasper. More on this adventure here! |
Nine more sled dogs retired today!
Meet Batman, Cap, Kerri, Pumpkin, Sparkle, Stevie, Teddy + Tig! Herman also arrived into care but he was whisked away to his foster home before I got a photo of him. Will hopefully meet him soon! More on their arrival here! |
Wunderdog Magazine picked up my story idea so I met up with new squisy-faced friends for another photo session.
Thanks Tonic, Tanker, Gerty + Mel! More from this session here! |
I'd pitched a story idea to Wunderdog Magazine which featured the Victoria Bulldog Rescue. I've known Mel for years, so we met up to discuss and I got to meet adorable Tonic!
Although mostly deaf, she did such a good job of sitting in position for me! Update November 2021: my piece made it into Issue #5 of Wunderdog Magazine and you'll see the photo of Tonic in front of the castle as the lead photo for the story! |
Today was a chance for new (Kit, Mossy, Jo, Vinnie) and former retirees (Shrek + Jasper) to have a little meet up and zoom around a school yard!
I also got to meet Jo and Vinne! More on this super fun meet up here! |
Mossy + Kit, former sled dogs, arrived into care recently and I finally got to meet them!
These two are siblings, along with Camino who came into care last April. Mossy is mostly (if not fully) blind, but doesn't let it stop him from getting around. And Kit is just a love too. Welcome to retirement Mossy + Kit! |
What happens to sled dogs who need to retire?
Hopefully they have a gang like the group who helped these four into retirement! One person drove them from Whistler to Vancouver, another person brought them over on the ferry from Vancouver to Victoria and four foster homes stepped up to bring them into their homes - amidst the pandemic - to help them learn about living the good life, in a home. Welcome Camino, Casey, Mildred + Splash! Adoption inquiries to: www.victoriahumanesociety.com |

A Man and His Dog is an annual fundraiser presented by Outlooks for Men. It's a chance to raise some much-needed funds for the Victoria Humane Society and help adoptable pets strut their stuff on the dog walk.
This was my fifth year photographing the event and although I focussed a bit more on the behind-the-scenes with the dogs, it was a great event! |
Sona had her last litter of puppies and was awaiting a new lease on life so her foster family brought her over for a photo session.
She was such a delight... so friendly and just posed and hung out without a care in the world. I'm so used to photographing shy and fearful dogs, that it was a whole new experience for me. And then, somewhere along the way... Sona fell asleep... so adorable. |
Peaches is a super special girl who was being fostered by a super special family.
One of the loveliest things that can happen in a pet photo session is the pet falls asleep- especially to a dog who is in transition and awaiting adoption. To me, that is the ultimate comfort and it means they feel safe and content. Shortly after her session Peaches got adopted! |
The big-eared puppies, at least that's what I called them
A six-pack of puppies who needed help so VHS with the help of an amazing foster home stepped up. Their breed? Who knows... but whatever their lineage, time will tell if they grow into their ears. In the meantime, they are known as the Disney litter - Bambi, Thumper, Lilo, Stitch, Lady + Flower. They were so ridiculously adorable, I couldn't stop photographing them. I have so many more images, it was hard to pick just a few for here. The weather was so hot this day, we were all thankful for the shade. Once sitting, human laps turned into comfy nap spots. Hope no one had anything else to do today. |
Who better to help create the photo booth than Mary-Kate and Roo and their very creative foster mom, Deb?
These two have been in care for a while- as former sled dogs they had a rough start to life, but they are barrels of fun. They love to go adventuring, but they can be absolute couch potatoes and prefer hanging out inside with the family. They're super sleddies! |
|
A great event for bringing awareness to the incredible work of the Victoria Humane Society as well as providing an opportunity for puppies to parade!
|
|
This guy. Thomas.
Is he a bit of a tank? Yes. In fact he did run into my camera in a bout of exuberance which made my camera hit my face and give me a minor black eye. All good though. Thomas is so cute and lovely I could only laugh. He's adoptable through: https://www.rosierdays.com |

Getting ready for the holidays at a pop-up shop! The Victoria Humane Society doesn't have a shelter so they rely on having meet n' greet events for puppies as often as needed.
VHS spokespup, Gus was on hand to show off his fancy RCMP uniform and to provide "security" at the front door... truth be told, he was more of a greeter! |
Scrolling through your facebook feed and you come across a cute photo of a puppy. The puppy is on the page of a rescue that you follow, or maybe one of your ‘friends’ shared the photo. The puppy is wearing a cone and it looks like something is happening with one of her eyes. You take the moment to read the caption and maybe your heart breaks more than usual because there’s “something” that resonates a bit more closely than you’re used to.
This is what happened with me and the photo of Callie. Click HERE to see full set of photos from this super fun session! |
Today I got to meet Pretty Girl - a lovely Bernese Mountain Dog who's recently given birth to nine fluffy pups.
She's also made headlines recently... Click HERE to see the full set of photos from my visit with Pretty Girl! |
|
Today I drove out of town to visit one of the most lovely foster homes the VHS has. Leanna is so patient and goes above and beyond... like a LOT of fosters do.
Today I met the lovely Arwen, a rescued sleddog who came in pregnant and had 9 puppies who are so stinking cute! I also got to meet, Ruby Blue, a very high energy and exuberant heeler who showed off her dock diving skills for me... again and again and again! Please scroll through the photos and enjoy the super cute names a classroom of under 5 year old came up with for Arwen's puppies! |
Eleanor came in with a group of daschunds a few years ago. All used as breeding stock, the humans could no longer care for them and they found themselves with the VHS.
Little Eleanor was fostered, and then adopted by a lovely couple who had already adopted a nice, big rottie named Baloo. To see these two together is quite a sight... so ridiculously cute. I got to photograph them at a local beach and it was beautiful to see the love these four share. |
Super Trooper, a special needs kitty who was adopted from VHS by a dear friend. I went to visit him and his sibs, Sampson and Frankie today. They all have varying degrees of CH, also known as wobbly cat syndrome. I'd say look it up, but I think you'll learn more from checking out Charla's instragram devoted to her cats: @wobblycats

Smooches for Pooches - yes, it was a kissing booth!
Did it rain? Yes! Did it smell like wet dog, even outside? Yes! Did it seem to bother anyone? No! So many dogs and their beloved humans came out for this fundraiser for Rosier Days. Scroll through the gallery and view all the silly little muffins and the devoted humans. https://www.rosierdays.com |
|
Max - Max a Million... what a lovely pupper. He's currently in the care of Rosier Days while they fix some issues with his insides.
This big guy just wants to be a lap dog. Seriously. https://www.rosierdays.com |
Today started with a walk in the woods with some sleddies and a pyrenees... then I put on my volunteer hat and went to get some more photos and videos of some 4-week-old puppies at their foster home.
Ruff Sunday. Click HERE to see how RUFF it really was! |
|
A few years ago I made a book about a new momma dog named Rosie. I called it "100 Pictures of Puppies and their mama Rosie".
And today I met a new momma named Rosie and she's just as lovely! Yes, the puppies are so easy to photograph! They're look cute whether they're sleeping, eating and yawning... easy. But it's the moms who really get me. The ones who have put in the time caring for the wee ones. Knowing that they will no longer have to raise any more puppies is exciting because I see those glimpses of them having the chance to just be a dog... not a money maker, or a mom, or anything but the best they can be. Good girl Rosie! I can't wait to see you and your puppies grow! |
|
SO. MANY. PUPPIES!
There are so many puppies that the VHs is currently running on puppy power... yes, if it weren't for these little cuties, the foster homes would be napping and taking a breather. But as they say in Game of Thrones, "winter is coming" and it's imperative that they get as many puppies and moms into warmth that they can. |
When you step up to foster dogs it's sometimes unknown how long they'll be hanging out at your place.
In the case of rescued sled dog, Mary Kate, it's been a while. Through no fault of her own, she's taking a bit longer than her kennel mates to find that perfect match... but that's ok. Her foster home is committed to help her and both she and MK will know when the right forever home steps up. Please CLICK HERE for more on Mary-Kate's story and how she made it from Ontario to the west coast. |
The annual Man + His Dog fundraiser and fashion show was a huge success!
Check out my photo gallery on my blog: Man + His Dog 2017 |
With so many animals in care, I headed out with my friend Heather who is an amazing BTS helper, to get some photos of just a few of the incredible sweethearts VHS has in care.
I met Bentley, Harley, Edina and Ellie the dogs. And then popped inside where I encountered a gaggle, cadre, murder (?) of kittens and their beautiful mom (who has a home). Then back outside to meet the GOATS who have found a permanent home with their super duper foster! Foster homes are an integral part of running a rescue that doesn't have a home base to call their own. Through the committed network and dedicated fosters, all these deserving animals will get another chance for a life of care and love. |
Sunday, March 4, 2017 in Victoria, BC - started out with ok weather, but on my way out to the kennels to photograph some adoptable dogs, it SNOWED... hard. And then wet snow, and rain. It was awful, I almost pulled the plug, but I knew there were volunteers waiting for me and the dogs would be ready to go. I'm so glad I didn't postpone it. The dogs were one of the most relaxed bunch of dogs I've ever photographed. We did a group of 3, then a group of 4 and they just hung out with their volunteer escorts getting and giving loves. It was a giant love fest!
By the time we were done, the sun came out as I headed to a foster home to photograph one more dog, Reggie. Just when I thought the dogs couldn't get any sweeter, I met him, His tail would not stop, he leaned in for hugs and loves to both me and my husband - two strangers he'd never met. Although he was nervous of the shutter click on my camera, he recovered well and took all the treats and pets I could give. Thank you to volunteers Aima, Darragh, Katelyn & Natasha and to Cathy, Reggie's foster mom. But most of all, thank you to these incredibly lovely dogs who through no fault of their own are looking for new digs. A place they can curl up and feel safe and will be treated with the love and compassion they deserve. Bae, Felix, Bella Bean, Liam, Snape, Jesse, Oscar and Reggie. For adoption info, please visit the Victoria Humane Society website, or their facebook page! |
One of the silliest groups of dogs I've ever photographed!
Weasley, Hagrid, McGonagal, Cooper, Jake, Manfrotto (the tripod sweetheart with three legs), Sunny and Brindle Bun! Adoption info at: victoriahumanesociety.com |
With most animals in foster homes, I can't always be the one to photograph the adoptable animals. But I can help by using the wonderful foster-family photos of the VHS adoptables to make up special-themed cards to be shared on the VHS facebook page.
With Valentine's Day on Sunday, it's only appropriate I make up special-edition VHS Valentine's cards! Just look at these cuties... will you be their valentine? |
Sometimes my volunteer gig is a tough one... I mean, hanging out with TEN adorable puppies for an hour... or two - who's keeping track of time?
At about 7-weeks old, this chocolate-themed litter is so ridiculously cute, but not as cute as their mom, Purdy. But Purdy has a home, so now it's time to find homes for the pups, but I have a sneaking suspicion they'll be adopted up in no time... once they get their spay/neuter surgeries, of course! Thanks to April for opening her home to the pups along with us humans, and to Heather for helping me keep track of them all! |
We had a death in the family this week. We knew it was coming, but it doesn't make it easier.
But time and dog therapy helps. I was going to wait to go get photos, but this compulsion of mine won't stop and I knew it would be something that would give me focus on something else. The time flies by and the world stops. Today I got to meet some new retired sled dogs who are ready for adoption. Hurricane I met back in 2013 up at the kennels in Whistler. He's famous for chewing up my lens cap, which I still have and will keep as a reminder. Things with his human have changed and he's in need of a new home. He's smart, sensitive and very food motivated! Stuart Little, Tag, young Zazou were just love bugs. Cherry's going to take some time, but I'm sure once her confidence kicks in, she'll be a lap dog. Cole, Mr Big and Shadow were kind enough to sit and pose and smile - very patient.. Nothing like photographing black dogs in the sunshine. Lastly, I must thank Nichole, the owner of the kennel who boards the Victoria Humane Society dogs. She's so patient with me and helps with wrangling the dogs... and today she took a photo that makes me cry. I prefer to be on the other side of the camera whenever possible, but when hugging a dog, all bets are off. Thanks Nichole! |
Spending years photographing dogs who are in transition awaiting forever homes, I've always let the dog dictate the photo shoot. Don't want to sit and pose? No problem, I'll just follow you around, or even just have a seat and let you come to me... or don't come to me and I'll just photograph from far away. It's not the rule, but more often than not, the dog will be nervous of the camera and/or the shutter click, so the challenge isn't necessarily getting the photos, it's how I'm going to put them together so I can highlight the dog's personality in the hopes someone will come across their profile and see a soul mate.
Here's what the dogs told me on my visit to the kennels where they're awaiting forever homes... In addition to Goldie, Harry, Khaleesi, Rosa, Trixie and Ellie, there was Piper. He got his own video... Piper Loves Tummy Rubs. |

The Victoria Humane Society was getting a lot of questions about adopting sleddies so I made up this video!
Wish I could've included ALL of my sleddie buddies, but that will have to wait for my upcoming book! |
What can I say except this wee girl had so much fight in her, but ultimately, whatever it was that was making her so ill, well it won.
She was skinny and frail, but had spunk and energy enough to engage with the people around her. She was a trooper and I'm lucky to have had the chance to meet her. Rest in love and peace. |

Sweet Samantha.
The beauty was transferred from a remote community with a broken leg. She's had surgery and is on the road to recovery, but she has to have short physio appointments during the day and those aren't very pleasant for her. But she endures it because it means she gets out of her kennel and into loving arms. Whoever is lucky enough to adopt Samantha is going to see her shine. www.victoriahumanesociety.com |

L'il Whistle.
At almost 9 weeks old, this wee retired sled dog puppy is fighting for her life. Test upon test has been done and although a couple conditions have come up, treatment isn't consistently working. So more tests have been done. I was there for her last blood test before going back to the vet for round the clock care. She is beyond skinny, but she's got spunk and energy. When you hold her, you have to be careful of her tummy because it hurts her. She travels by box because being in the crate is too stressful for her and keeping her low-stress is the key because when she gets stressed, she heaves and vomits. She's got a great team behind her and tons of love and support. Stay strong l'il Whistle! If you'd like to make a donation to help for Whistle's care, please visit: www.victoriahumanesociety.com |

I have a very soft spot in my heart for retired sled dogs and these guys are no exception.
There is a different energy with these dogs - perhaps it's because of their working backgrounds - but I know one thing for certain... they are some of the sweetest, most gentle dogs I've ever met. Introducing: Cutie, Betty, Daisy, Farmer, Goldie, Lefty, Louie, Otter, Piper + Trixie. For more about my journey with retired sled dogs, visit here. |

There is something about the feeling of being surrounded by a whole bunch of dogs... I love it.
Whether they're big or small, it doesn't matter. So when I go to the kennels where some of the Victoria Humane Society dogs hang out while awaiting adoption, I jump at it. I don't try to get them to sit pretty or stay... if they sit, it's great, but I like to just watch them do their thing - run, play, trot along, get loves from whoever is there helping (thanks Nichole!) - because this is most likely what you'll see when you bring them home and I think it helps to show their personality. Anyways, this bunch was awesome - from little Cricket who trundled along to Khaleesi who is part jack rabbit to Devi, who would offer up her tummy as soon as you stopped, Darcy who was more interested in watching the action, Cali who was playful but showed she would sit for the squeaky sound and Ellie with her furrowed Ridgeback brow who could run like the wind and the puppies Olivia & Sandy Beach whose energy was contagious... what an amazing bunch of pups! www.victoriahumanesociety.com |

Bingo came into care with a crushed trachea.
As you can see, his poor wee head is swollen - when I pet him, it was soft and you could tell how much pain this little guy must've been in. Thanks to pain meds, he was kind of out of it, but he was so, so sweet. Good luck little dude! www.victoriahumanesociety.com |

I got to visit Miss Misty after surgery and it went well. Her leg has been saved for now, but it's still early days.
Wishing this sweet little girl all the best for recovery. If you'd like to donate to her care, please visit: www.victoriahumanesociety.com |

Misty came into care with a broken leg requiring surgery. It was uncertain whether or not she would be able to keep it, but I will be following up after surgery and will share a photo update.
This young gal had one of the wiggly-est bums of any pittie I've seen so I thought she needed a new name... |

Meet the newest litter of puppies in foster with the Victoria Humane Society!
These pups are only about 5 weeks old so they need some more time in foster care until they'll be ready for adoption. They were an absolute delight to hang out with and payment came in the form of puppy kisses, nibbles and snuggles... worth it every time. And Greg's eyebrows... so adorable. Thanks to creative team of Heather & Chris for coming up with yet another litter theme! These pups totally suit their names. For adoption info: www.victoriahumanesociety.com |

I jumped at the chance to put together a video to remember the amazing, yet too short, time Hank's foster family got to spend with him.
Supplied with an incredibly touching write up and 30+ images, this is what I came up with. To read the write up made in his memory, please visit post from Feb 24, 2015 on the Victoria Humane Society facebook page and make sure you've got some tissues handy. |

In preparation for the big day on February 13th, I put together this video of Gus - some of my photos and some from the facebook page.
Gus is the VHS spokesdog. He was born on the day of the VHS official launch and he came into care a few weeks later. He was sick. It turns out he was diagnosed with Persistant Right Aortic Arch, which basically means he'll have to eat sitting upright in a specially made Bailey Chair for the rest of his life. Since he needed such close supervision, from the get-go he came everywhere - to all VHS events. He met other dogs - big and small - and LOTS of people. Not sure a dog has been more hugged (or photographed) than this guy. And he takes it all in stride. Everyone is just so proud of him - especially his foster family, who have become foster failures. **EDIT: video isn't playing (I'm trying to figure it out!) |

Max had some bladder stones, but they're all gone now and he's on the road to recovery!
Heal up buddy and see you again! |

Happy. Her name says it all. This wee one lost her eye, but hasn't lost her spirit...
I popped in to her foster home to say hi! |
|
Armed with a couple adoptable puppies on hand to add smiles to the faces of the shoppers (thank you Maggie & May!), to little 14-year-old Tuffy who's still awaiting his forever home, plus a whole lot of VHS alumni stopping by to say hi, we're having quite the time!
Thanks Bosley's at Royal Oak Plaza for hosting us and helping to promote adoption! |
|
Thank you to Outlooks for Men and Glo for putting on this amazing night of fluffy faces and dapper dudes. Even a sprinkling of rain couldn't stop this night full of fashion and fur (still attached to the animals, of course).
Some of our VHS adoptables even got to strut their stuff on the dogwalk and we're so proud of them! Great job Lily, Buddy, Puck, Bruno, Diesel and all the puppies! |

A sled dog operation in Pemberton, BC, closed and the dogs who worked pulling sleds needed a home. They were scared, nervous of everything and hadn't had much positive human contact. But VHS volunteers stepped up and started to help ease the dogs into positive contact with humans by sitting quietly with them, and taking them for walks in a rural setting to get them them used to walking on a leash and encountering new sights and sounds.... here is one of their first walking excursions... and even the young ones came out to help.

I wasn't sure it was a good idea. Load up two little dogs and two cameras and head downtown to be a part of the Pride Parade with the Victoria Humane Society. As part of my photo project of documenting the first year of this amazing, new rescue, I try to make it to as many events as I can… and since I knew this would have all sorts of colour, I thought I'd bring the two Cocos (my "the Mister" and my sister, the little Miss) and see how it went…. All the pups on hand were decked out in Pride finery... from ties to tutus - and the humans did a pretty good job of colourfying themselves as well. And aside from the fright of some popping balloons while waiting to go, these two little muffins, as well as all the dogs, did very well… some even got carried for most of it, which was fine because it made them even cuter.
But somewhere along the way, while juggling the Mister on my shoulder and my camera I must've hit a button - still not sure which one… but it was button that switched the ever-colourful parade, monochrome, yes it was just suddenly shades of gray. But instead of trying to figure out what the hell just happened, I decided to just got with it. I may have some of the only b+w images of a parade known for it's vibrancy and energy, but that's ok. I will embrace them and hope they still impart some of the "colour" of an amazing afternoon. I am so proud of this amazing organization and their commitment to helping animals. Their slogan of "Let the love begin" has taken hold, and they are now truly, letting the love continue... for all beings. Thanks to both Marg + Melissa for getting a couple snaps of me and the pups, and to Ivana for carrying the little Miss Coco along the parade. xo For more info on the amazing work of the Victoria Humane Society, visit their website, or "like" their facebook page! |

Izzy has allergies... serious allergies. The kind that have turned her skin pink, scabbed, raw and smelly. The kind that make her breathing sound congested and have swollen the pads of her feet so she limps. It's undetermined what's causing all of this, but the Victoria Humane Society is going to do everything they can to get to the bottom of it and get her well. She's only six so she's got a lot more years of playing and silliness ahead of her. This little girl was well loved, that I can tell. She loves to snuggle up on the couch and if she was feeling better, she seems like she would love to be outside sniffing and trundling around the neighbourhood - in the nice weather, of course. She's confident and has great manners, and gets along with other dogs. She will be in foster care until her allergies are under control, but it's going to take time, patience, money and love.
I will consider these just the "before" photos... I know she'll get better in time... so please follow her updates on the Victoria Humane Society's facebook page, or visit their website for information on how you can help Izzy and all of the other animals who come into their care. |

It was all hands (and paws) on deck as the Victoria Humane Society officially launched! Sure they've been in operation for the last three months and in that time have helped over 100 dogs, 30+ cats and some bunnies, but now they've got a website, a logo and are looking to raise enough money to purchase property for a shelter. For all the details and how to donate, please visit their website!

Molly was left locked in the enclosure at the dump in Logan Lake. I met her back on Jan 10 (see photos from Jan 10) and she was just shaking the whole time. She had to be carried out to the car. She was shut down. Well, it's been a week and she's a different dog! Although she's still shy of new people, it's clear that she's relaxed with her foster family. She's a lovely girl and is enjoying the company of her foster sibling, Tillie, who is also available for adoption. Thanks to Norma and Gord as well as their lovely, patient, sweetheart dogs, Angel and Taffy, for sharing their home.
For adoption/donation/foster information, please contact the Victoria Humane Society. |

Olive is a 2 yr. old chi/weenie (chihuahua/daschund mix) who, due to genetics, has two knees that need to be repaired. She's had her first knee surgery and is recovering well. Olive is currently in foster care and will require her second knee to be surgically fixed so that she can continue to live a happy and active life. This surgery costs approximately $4000. and the Victoria Humane Society is accepting donations. Please visit their facebook page for details on how you can donate/help! |

Molly was left at the dump in Logan Lake. Thankfully there's a fantastic network of people who are helping animals in remote communities... and Molly's one of the lucky ones! I went along with Penny Stone to meet Molly and six puppies (not hers) who were heading into foster homes.
