It was almost a year ago when I reached out to Mel and the Victoria Bulldog Society (VBS) to see if they'd be interested in participating in a piece for Wunderdog Magazine. They said yes, so we met up a couple times (in December 2020 & January 2021) for some photos and chats. I've known Mel for years, but this gave me the chance to really hear what her day-to-days are like running a rescue from her home. The piece made it into Issue #5 and is keeping company with the likes of Nowzad Rescue, Wuhan Rescue and sooooo many other like-minded people around the world who are doing their best to help dogs.
Thanks to Tonic for being the star of the piece and to Gerty and Tanker (RIP) for letting me photograph them for this piece. VBS is global! You can get a copy of the magazine through Wunderdog Magazine's website as well as Barnes & Noble stores (in the US only). Since this piece, VBS has taken in so many more bulldogs and they could really use your help! To see what they're up to and to donate, visit them on social media (their website is under construction): facebook: https://www.facebook.com/VictoriaBulldogSociety/ instagram: @VictoriaBulldogSociety Here are some photos that didn't make it into the piece. Well it took a bit of re-working once I got my proof copy back , but alas, it is FINISHED and I have done my vodka shot in celebration! All proceeds from the sale of SHELTERED DOGS will go towards helping animals in need... maybe some spay/neuters, or contributing to a surgery, or food, or a groom, or another advocacy or education project, or paying for some rescue rehabilitation... however I can help. And I'm casting a wider net with these funds - choosing to help the animals in Victoria directly, to respond to the stories - because I see and hear everyday just how many animals are in need... the dogs in this book are just a drop in the bucket. For ordering details, go here! Got my copy of SHELTERED DOGS back from the printer and, well, let's just say there's a few problems that I have to fix before it's ready - have no fear, it'll be ready in the next couple of days... However, I also got back THREE other books I'd been working on that ARE ready... so, yay! ALL are available for purchase through this handy-dandy page, here!
As I have no idea how many books to order to have on hand, like with my last book, I'll be taking pre-orders THIS WEEK and will put the order in on Saturday, Nov 23 and the stock should be here within 2 weeks (Dec 7)! At which time I'll contact you to arrange delivery! A sampling of pages are viewable through the blurb.ca site, but if you'd like to see the books in person, drop me a note and we can set up time to meet. SHELTERED DOGS - a home away from home book will be available for pre-order next week! As with my last book, all proceeds will be going back to helping animals. Although this time I'm widening my net and helping animals who are in the care of, or need the care of shelters and rescues as well as funding advocacy and educational programs. Stay tuned for ordering details! I was introduced to the art of bookmaking today and I must say... what an amazing day! I love books, and I seem to be appreciating them more with each passing year, but a day of being off the computer and using my hands (and brain) to create something tangible was like being able to take a deep breath... it was like having a day in the darkroom, only there were more people around... and it was light. Since it was my first attempt at this craft I was too focused on the measuring and sewing and gluing the right spots, to get any photos during the process, but rest assured, I will be making more. In fact, I'm already trying to figure out how to re-organize my studio to make room for an area that could just be set up for bookmaking. If you are interested in learning more or making a book on your own, I would suggest taking the course through Luz Studio & Gallery, here in Victoria. Studio owner/photographer/bookmaker, Quinton has been at this for years and I must say he's a very patient teacher! So now I've got an 8 x 8, hand-stitched, fabric-covered, 25-page blank book with a fish de-boss on the back and headbands in the spine! Not sure what I'll use it for, but with all the possibilities to customize the size, covering, page paper, end sheets, etc... I'll definitely be making more! |
